It is often the case that more than one machine is capable of performing a particular operation.

The group of machines that are declared as being capable of performing an operation is called the set of alternate machines for that operation.

The first machine in this list is called the first alternate machine or primary machine.  The second, third and higher machines are the second alternate machine, third alternate machine and so on.

There is no practical limit on the number of alternate machines that can be declared for a single operation.  The Production Traveler Operation screen displays ten (10) alternate machines, but can scroll multiples of 10 without limit for the same operation.

Whenever an alternate machine is declared, the following corresponding items are necessarily specified as well:

bulletStandard setup time for the operation
bulletStandard unit run time or production rate
bulletStep yield percentage
bulletDicing factor
bulletAttention factor percentage

It should go without saying that each of these 5 items may be different for each alternate machine.

The Scheduler and Alternate Machines

When the scheduler, PROSPAC's "scheduling engine", encounters an operation having alternate machines, it uses one of a set of  Alternate Machine Selection rules to determine which one of the alternate machines on which it will schedule the operation.

Some of these rules cause the scheduler to:

bullet

select the alternate machine with the least machine utilization

bullet

select the alternate machine with least number of jobs assigned

bullet

select the alternate machine that completes the operation at the earliest time

bullet

select the alternate machine that results in completing the work order at the earliest time

bullet

select the primary machine if it can begin operation within x hours after the completion of the prior operation in the routing sequence; if the wait is greater than x hours, then select the alternate machine that   completes the operation at the earliest time

There are other Alternate Machine Selection rules similar to these that address such variables as reject history percentages, step yields, attention factors, changeover times (setup savings), tooling availability, operator availability, and efficiency percentages.
